Emotionally Focused Marriage & Family Therapy
The Science of Emotion
So often we think that ‘science’ and ‘emotion’ are opposites. However, the emotional interactions of couples and families have now been scientifically researched and studied. And today, the patterns discovered inform a powerful type of therapy known as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT).
EFT has been validated by over 20 years of empirical research. In fact, research studies show that 70-75% of couples move from distress to recovery with EFT, and approximately 90% show significant improvements.
What is EFT?
At its heart, EFT is about connection. The goal of EFT is to move away from distress and toward a secure, lasting, and close bond in our intimate relationships.
But with EFT our need for connection is also seen as the key to understanding our own emotional responses as well as those of our partner or family members. EFT reframes our negative cycles of interaction as our best attempts to deal with some threat we perceive to our need for connection, and this new perspective opens the gateway to healing.
Practical & Proven
In keeping with its scientific heritage, EFT employs a pragmatic, structured approach to therapy that includes concrete change strategies and interventions, and maps the key inflection points in the change process into 9 steps and 3 change events.
